Loving the Truth that Saves UsSt. John 8:46-50 Today is Passion Sunday. This Sunday marks the beginning of a time for sober reflection upon the sufferings of Christ. In two weeks the Church will once more commemorate in real time the most important events in human history. God made man was crucified, dead and rose again. Monday, March 27, 2006
Gather up the Fragments for the Battle is The Lord'sHaving a strategy and an endless supply of reinforcements ought to be our goal as we pursue holiness and sanctification in this world we live in. But what kind of weapons do we fight with in order to pursue holy lives and overcome in this world that is given too much temptation and fear which is apposed to the love of God. Christ our Rest and Victory over all our EnemiesWe are at war. All the lessons of our Lenten season reflect this fundamental fact. As the apostle St. Paul says, our battle is not against flesh and blood. There is a war continually being fought around us. Every Christian is a soldier called to active duty in it. It is the spiritual war for the kingdom of Christ against the principalities and powers in the air which strive to keep the world under slavery to the evil prince of this world. "You Can Pay Me Now or Pay me Later"The human condition loves to rationalize and place bets on itself putting its faith in the things that are temporal and end up paying latter for the consequences of the actions taken by putting our faith in our fallen nature rather than in Gods ability to save. Lessons on Spiritual Warfare.First Sunday in Lent The lessons for the first Sunday of Lent lead us to consider our Lord's spiritual battle at the beginning of his ministry. We are reminded in the collect that Jesus endured a fast of forty days and forty nights for our sake. Sunday, February 26, 2006
"What's love got to do with it?"The church itself has fallen victim to the mass marketing of the individual and not to the "love of mankind" that we see in the blessed mother Teresa. We have to remember that ideas have consequences and the consequence of the ideas of the mass marketing of the church will lead to the loss of love and care for the image of God within the people of God. Love is not a feeling. Monday, February 20, 2006
Bearing Fruit in Christ. Our lessons for the pre-lent season combine the teaching of the apostle St. Paul speaking to the Corinthians with key parables of the Gospel to prepare us for the period of repentance we will go through Lent. These lessons highlight important principles of the Christian life concerning our works and our trust. Saturday, February 18, 2006
Hang In There! But in the Greek world, where these games started, the idea of virtue was popular among the athletes the character of the athlete was measured by his ability to finish the race. These ideas were fostered by the philosophers Aristotle and Plato. These virtues were called cardinal, not the birds, but cardinal coming from the Latin word that means the hinge of a door or pivotal. The idea of virtue can be said that it is that thing that keeps us secure and holds our lives grounded like an anchor to a boat. The cardinal virtues are prudence, temperance, justice and fortitude. The Ruling of the HeartOur lives have two sides. One side is open to public scrutiny. The other is private, and only God knows and understands it fully. These aspects of our lives are always and continually interacting with each other. Our outer works and circumstances affect our desires and thoughts and our inward meditation is reflected in our outward conduct. Monday, January 30, 2006
"Who's in Charge?"The question of authority, or who's in charge, sticks at the heart of the nature of the problem in all men and at all times in history. This is not a new problem but a problem that goes all the way back to the garden. When the snake spoke to Eve his question wasn't about what's for lunch, but who's in charge. |
